Puntacana Resort & Club is one of the Caribbean’s most established and exclusive communities, stretching along roughly five miles of coastline on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, in La Altagracia province. Its story began in 1969, when a group of American investors led by Ted Kheel acquired about 30 square miles of untouched land, then known as Punta Borrachón. Dominican entrepreneur Frank Rainieri later joined the project and gave it its name, inspired by the native Cana palm.
The resort’s founders built Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), which opened in 1984 as the world’s first privately built, owned and operated international airport. From fewer than 3,000 passengers in its first year, it now welcomes more than 10 million travelers annually, just minutes from the community. The Coral Highway connects the area to La Romana in about 35 minutes and to Santo Domingo in under two hours.
